Volunteering Nuts and Bolts Commitment We ask that volunteers commit four to eight hours per month; this can be as little as one hour per week. We want you to volunteer as often as your schedule will allow. After 6 months of inactivity your active status will be removed and you must attend another orientation prior to volunteering again.
Age Volunteers must be at least 16 years old or be supervised by a parent or guardian. Children under 16 may not handle dogs independently. Volunteers and their parents/guardians must attend orientation prior to volunteering.
Junior Volunteers (age 10-15) Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent/guardian at all times. No more than one child per adult. Volunteers under 18 must have parent’s signature on the liability waiver.
Volunteers in Programs for Developmental Disabilities The programs that we currently work with are Ark of the Ozarks, Footsteps, First Steps, and Abilities First; it is not limited to these agencies. The individual must be accompanied by their program staff member at all times. Every program staff member that assists the volunteer is required to attend an orientation.
Requirements for Volunteers
Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. If younger than 16, they must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian at all times while volunteering. (Only one child per adult) Junior volunteers AND parents must complete a volunteer application and sign a waiver of liability.
All volunteers are required to complete a volunteer orientation prior to any volunteering activities.
Schedules are not required for our volunteers, but we do ask that they try to commit to 8 volunteer hours a month. However, we do have special volunteer opportunities that require a commitment to a specific schedule for participation. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information.
For your safety Volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes at all times while volunteering. They are also required to wear a Humane Society volunteer T-shirt, which can be purchased for $10.
If you have a group that would like to commit to a one time project please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 833-2526 ext.204 to discuss various options.
Volunteers can be at the Shelter during the hours that the adoption center staff is in the building:
Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00pm
Criminal records cannot include felonies, and all other convictions are reviewed on a case by case basis.
Volunteers agree to support the philosophies, positions and policies of the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri. This includes supporting the staff on decisions and policies.
For more information, contact the shelter at email@example.com. Thank you for your interest in helping us help them!
